Chamonix to Zermatt Haute Route

Here's a quick little video from our last Haute Route of the season.  We had amazing weather and a great group.  The Europeans were complaining of the "worst winter in 40 years" but it didn't stop us from having a blast.  A little bit of corn, a little bit of powder, a ton of sun and even some Italian cappuccinos at the end.  What more do you need on an Alps ski mountaineering adventure?

Winter Continues

The never ending winter continues.  According to the calendar it is officially spring but the weather doesn't seem to care.  We continue to get huge dumps of snow with low freezing levels.  The backcountry skiing conditions seem like mid-February rather than early April.  It's hard to believe but it's true.  For those of you that have not been following the weather in the North Cascades here's a little sample of the skiing.  This video was shot on Tuesday April 5, 2011.

It is always difficult to leave the North Cascades when the skiing is so good, but it's hard to complain about spending a week at a backcountry ski lodge in British Columbia.  Fortunately ski conditions in the BC interior are often very similar to what we experience around Washington Pass, so we didn't miss a thing.  We had a great group of folks this year and were lucky enough to have good stability with perfect snow in the first part of the week followed by some amazing storm skiing.

It's Only Getting Better

The skiing doesn't get much better than this.  I've just spent the last nine days in a row backcountry skiing near Washington Pass.  I finally took the day off to rest the knees, but it took true motivation to put the skis down for a day.  Fortunately it looks like the cold weather and storms are going to continue.  We have some guide availability next week.  Give the office a call if you want to book a day of face shots....

Paul and Laurie Sherman joined larry last year for a day of backcountry skiing in First Bowl of Cutthroat.  We had an incredible day and they vowed to be back with some friends.  Sure enough, they showed up again this year with four additional friends.  I made this short video with a few photos and video clips that I shot during the day.  We had great powder and good stability allowing us to ski some steep lines that you will see in the video.  I hope you enjoy it!

Best skiing of the year!

The skiing in the North Cascades is going off right now.  Its deep and fluffy with good stability.  This video was shot today on the West Ridge of Silver Star with locals Josh Cole and Larry Miller.  I would have shot more video, but the skiing was too good.... Enjoy!

Short Video of Skiing on Wednesday

As a ski guide you almost always end up skiing the slope first.  It means fresh tracks every day, but it makes it hard to get good follow cam shots.  I think I might have come up with a solution.  Check out this short video shot Wednesday Jan 9th.  The ski conditions are good right now and it looks like we're headed into a stormy weather pattern.  Bring it on!!

Another sunny day of powder skiing in the North Cascades. We picked up an additional 9 inches of low-density snow with temperatures hovering around zero degrees Fahrenheit. I love my job....

Still Finding Good Snow

We are still finding good snow and great stability in the mountains. Right now seems to be a good time to ski some of those steeper lines. This video was shot this weekend near Harts Pass. The best quality snow is on east aspects at treeline and above. Have fun out there and enjoy the video.
