Well, it’s officially here, Spring.  As a die-hard backcountry powder skier it’s hard to say goodbye to winter.  I live for the short, cold days of mid-winter.  Those days where it’s nearly impossible to stay dry because it is dumping so hard.  Deep trail breaking and non-stop face shots.  There are just endless reasons to love mid-winter skiing.  Fortunately Spring has a few upsides as well.  A few days ago I was able to ski boot-top powder down a 2,000’ north facing run, followed by another 2,000’ of corn on the way home, and I still had time to play with my daughter at the park in the warm afternoon sunshine.  Springtime at NCMG also means the European Ski Mountaineering season.  Our fist Chanomix to

Zermatt Haute Route

started yesterday.  Ski Mountaineering in the
Alps means long glacial ski descents followed by a cold beer at a high mountain hut at the end of the day.  It’s hard to say goodbye to winter but spring is a nice consolation prize, and there’s always the chance for one last face shot. (below: Rob Fallon getting lucky last week)
