Backcountry Conditions Report - Late February 2014
Current Conditions
I think it is fair to say that the February storm is one of the longest, most productive storms I've seen in a long, long time. I tallied up the snow totals at the yurt, which are taken twice a day, from when the storm started on February 9th until February 23rd, and the total snowfall during that time frame was 352 centimeters. That is over eleven feet of snow in two weeks (for those of you who prefer their snow measurements in good old 'merican). Not bad.
Snowpack Video from Stevens Pass 2/11/14
We had a fun time skiing in the Stevens Pass zone today. The 13" of new snow was welcome but the stability was less than perfect. Thanks to Larina Davis for the fun skiing and solid skills with the camera.
Backcountry Conditions Report - Late January 2014
Current Conditions
The high pressure has finally broken down and storms are starting to roll our way. Skiing corn in the sunshine was fun but we are all happy to have winter back. As I write this update I'm watching big, fat flakes fall outside my window. I've forgotten how sweet that is.
The Tipping Point
It looks like there is a storm forecasted to hit the region today and tonight. This storm could lay down a fair bit of snow. Something we’ve all be waiting for. With that in mind we need to make sure we are keeping our desires for pow in check.
Backcountry Conditions Report Early Dec. 2013
Current Conditions
The backcountry ski season around Washington Pass officially started with the big storm that hit the Northwest at the end of November. This storm laid down nearly two feet of new snow at Washington Pass and closed Highway 20 for the winter season.
Backcountry Conditions Report - Last Report of 2012/13
This will most likely be the last backcountry conditions report for the 2012/13 ski season. The DOT will start plowing the highway on Monday March 25, which will shut down snowmobile access to the ski terrain around Washington Pass. While there will still be some great turns to be had after the highway opens, the plowing of the highway is the symbolic end of winter for us at NCMG. There is still one last weekend to enjoy winter powder skiing. Don't miss out.
