Women's Alpine Touring Camp

January 6 - 9, 2011

Working with our partner, Winthrop Mountain Sports, we have created an all inclusive weekend for women that want to take their skiing and touring skills to the next level, in a positive, supportive learning environment.

Lets face it, women love spending time with other women. Inspired by this thought, we decided to create a weekend specifically for women, run exclusively by women. After the rush of the holidays, its time to take a bit of time for yourself, meet a bunch of gals and go skiing! We have pulled together some of the Northwest's top female instructors and guides for this long weekend clinic.

This clinic is designed for skiers of all abilities. We will have one instructor for every 3 participants, so we can keep groups small, personal and tailored to individual needs and goals. We thought we would hit on the big three skills for backcountry skiing; Skiing skills, avalanche skills, and touring skills. Over the course of the weekend, we have dedicated a whole day to each of these, punctuated with lots of laughs, great food and Methow charm. For those of you considering buying new gear, we will have lots of demo gear available for you to try, tons of great giveaways and discounts on purchases at Winthrop Mountain Sports!

Its hard not to be inspired in the Alps
We need more women in the backcountry!

Weekend Schedule:

Thursday evening: Hors devours, meet and greet and welcome slideshow. Weekend agenda will be discussed.

Friday: Small group ski clinics - Full day ski lesson at the Loup Loup ski bowl with some of the best ski instructors around. A low ratio will assure plenty of personalized attention. Demo gear will be available as well.

Saturday: Avalanche Workshop - A full day avy clinic with lots of outdoor time and a focus on rescue skills. Avalanche rescue gear will be provided.

Sunday: Backcountry Tour - A full day tour in small groups based on ability in the spectacular North Cascades.

Security is mostly a superstition. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Skills Required

Topping out on Cevedale
Rachel, all smiles, getting the goods.......

Participants should have some skiing experience. Thanks to the low instructor to student ratio, we will be skiing in very small groups and can tailor the groups to meet individual needs and goals. This means skiers of all abilities are welcome. The same goes for backcountry experience - you need not have skied in the backcountry ever before to participate. On the flip side, if you have toured extensively and want to improve your tracksetting skills, or learn more about terrain selection, we will have advanced group tours as well.

The most important skill to bring is the willingness to challenge yourself!

About the Instructors:

Anne Keller - a longtime Methow local, Anne has worked more than 10 years as a professional ski patroller, 6 winters as a heli-ski guide in Mazama and several years as a backcountry ski guide in Canada. She is an Emergency Medical Technician and has a formal education in Physical Therapy. Anne one of very few female AMGA certified Ski Mountaineering guides as well as a certified Canadian (ACMG) Ski Guide. Read more about Anne here.

Emily Grady - Emily has been involved with program development for the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) assistant ski guides program, instructing with the Canadian Ski Quest program out of Red Mountain Resort, teaching for the Kirsty Exner Women's Freeski Camps, conducting instructor-level courses for alpine and telemark skiers, and putting on Ski Improvement Clinics at cat-skiing and ski touring operations in the Kootenays. Read more about Emily here.

Erica Engle - Erica grew up skiing in Washington’s Cascades and has held a lifelong passion for fooling around in the outdoors. Her interests include alpine climbing and ski mountaineering, Spanish, ecology, literature, helicopters, and avoiding the urban matrix whenever possible. Erica has spent many winters ski patrolling at Crystal Mountain where she maintains her Wilderness EMT-B certification and Avalanche Level II. Erica is pursuing AMGA Ski Mountaineering certification. Read more about Erica here.

Molly Baker - Molly spent the first twenty-one years of her life in California; growing up in the Sierra Nevada foothills surrounding Yosemite and then obtaining an undergraduate degree in Physical Geography from U.C. Berkeley. Just hours after her last final at Berkeley she packed up her truck and moved to Salt Lake City, where she would spend the next four years of her life competing in big mountain freeskiing events and shooting with a variety of ski photographers. After discovering Mt. Baker, the allure of the northwest magnetized the skier and vagabond-at-heart to Washington state. She now spends summers mountain biking in Bellingham or traveling to the Southern Hemisphere. During the winter she can be found in front of a camera while traveling to multiple snowy destinations or writing for ESPN Freeskiing, Skiing Magazine, and The Ski Journal.
