West Ridge of Silver Star
Mazama Posse- Winter Solstice, 2007
| |
| On the first clear day in a while, NCMG guides
Scott Johnston, Katharine Bill and Larry Goldie were joined
by Mazama locals Midge Cross and Flash Clark as well as visiting
dignitaries Alan Watson and Steve House for a solstice tour
on the West Ridge of Silver Star Mountain. |
| |
| The route climbs several thousand feet
feet through enjoyable open forest before breaking out
at treeline to great views of the Wine Spires. Here Alan
tours on the ridge with the 4 spires behind him. |
| |
| Higher up Katharine climbs in front of
the Silver Star massif. Note the huge cave in the spire
on Silver Star's ridgeline. |
| |
| Dropping down we found delightful skiing
with cold, dry powder. |
| |
| Steve House proving to us that he still
remembers how to ski. |
| |
| Alan dropping down in front of the rimed
covered rocks of Silver Star. |
| |
| After touring back up in another basin,
we saw a line that just begged to be skied. Here Scott
drops in. The next 3 shots are a sequence of this run. |
| |
| This small gully feature had the snow
laid in perfectly. |
| |
| Further down..... |

| Scott with Snagtooth ridge behind him. |
| |
| Looking back up at our tracks from the
last sequence. With the days as short as they come, we
turned tail and headed back toward the West ridge, where
we found great snow all the way down to the road. |
