| Several years ago, local pilot and NCMG client
Lew Miller took Larry for an amazing scenic flight around the
North Cascades.(Click
here to see photos from that flight) After completing a
number of great climbs together this summer, Lew offered Larry
the chance to do it again. Jumping at the chance, Larry met
Lew at the Twisp Smokejumper base where Lew had flown in from
Wenatchee. |
| |
| The plane is called a Long EZ which Lew
built about 15 years ago. A very solid and stable little
aircraft, its unique in that the prop is in the rear. |
| |
| We took off heading toward Lake Chelan
and into the mountains north of the lake. The first peak
we circled was Bonanza peak, the largest non volcanic
peak in the Cascades. Here is a view of the North face
with the Company glacier visible in the lower right of
the shot. |
| |
| Circling around the peak, we got to see
the towering cliffs of the West side of the mountain.
| |
| Looking North from here Glacier Peak
dominates the skyline surrounded by a sea of lower peaks
and alpine lakes. |
| |
| Next we flew over to Dome peak with the
massive Chickamin glacier. |
| |
| The day was quite clear and the air very
still. Looking Southwest, Glacier peak stood watch with
Mt Ranier floating behind to the left. |
| |
| From here we swung over to the Cascade
Pass area. Here is a shot of the the incredible North
face of Mt Johannesburg. |
| |
| Another view of Johannesburg from slightly
more to the west. This photo captures how heavily glaciated
this section of the Cascades really are. |
| |
| Across the valley is Boston Basin. Looking
down on the Quien Sabe glacier, Boston and Sahale peaks.
Sahale is the pointy one with snow right to the summit. |
| |
| From there we buzzed right past the North
face of Mt Buckner. The route up this classic face looks
to be in great shape right now. |
| |
| Glancing back is Forbidden peak rising
above the Boston glacier. This photo shows the East ridge
(left skyline) and the North ridge as the right skyline.
| |
| Heading back to the east, we flew right
next to the North face of Mt Goode, looking very alpine
with an early season coating of snow. |
| |
| Here is a shot of the seldom seen Northeast
and North faces of Goldenhorn peak. |
| |
| Finally, getting closer to home, a view
of Silver Star and the amazing ski line of the Silver
Star Glacier. |
| |
| Flying down valley back to the airport,
the Fall colors lit up the river corridor, highlighting
the changing of the seasons here in the Methow Valley. |
