Ovi Horvat - South Early Winter Spire
Washington Pass - July 28, 2005

| |
| After completeing the Glacier Travel Training
course in July, Ovi Horvat had some extra time and wished to
take in an alpine summit. Not having done any rockclimbing in
the past, but with good athletic skills, Ovi and Larry decided
to take a shot at the South Arete of South Early WInter Spire. |
| |
 |
| The climb begins with an approach hike
up the ever popular Blue Lake trail. Here Ovi hikes up
with Cutthroat peak in the background. |
|
| |
 |
| WIth a natural aptitude for rock climbing,
Ovi barely slowed down on any of the routes mostly moderate
climbing. Here Ovi works up one of the clean corners low
on the route. |
|
| |
 |
| Higher up, the route climbs across a
small knife edge ridge. Ovi confidently moved across it,
fully enjoying the exposure. |
|
| |
 |
| We waited a few minutes near the top
for a slower party ahead of us to get across another narrow
section of ridge. Niether of us minded a leisurely climb
on such a spectacular day. |
|
| |
 |
| Here Ovi poses near the top with Silver
Star Mountain in the backgorund. |
|
| |
 |
| The last few moves of the climb are incredibly
exposed with this traverse looking right down at the highway
over 2000 feet below. Ovi seemed to love the exposure
and being such a natural rock climber, I suspect will
be back for many more climbs. |
