First Bowl of Cutthroat
Jeff Montgomery and Anna Schaad- Feb 15, 2008
|
|
|
| |
| On February 15th, Jeff Montgomery and Anna
Schaad started the day of backcountry skiing with blue skies
in Mazama, high clouds in the mountains to the west, and a forecast
for warming temperatures. They enjoyed hot chocolate after arriving
below the First Bowl of Cutthroat. As the skies gradually darkened,
Katharine led Jeff and Anna through small trees and into the
open upper bowl, quietly hoping that the dark clouds would not
turn to rain. At the first break sunshine briefly came through
to illuminate the slopes above, and when the precip. did start
falling, it came as snow- hooray! Anna opted to stop at treeline
and admire the 200 year-old larch trees, while Katharine and
Jeff climbed the 800' couloir to the ridge of Washington Pass
Peak above. Unfortunately thick clouds did not allow for any
view of the beautiful Liberty Bell or Silver Star spires. Jeff
and Katharine skied back through the whiteout to join Anna for
lunch, and all skied back as large wet flakes fell from the
sky (still not rain!) on untracked snow. A dynamic day in Cutthroat
Bowl! |
