| The lowland skiing has been incredible lately.
To fully take advantage of that, a posse of Mazama locals including
NCMG guides Katharine Bill, Scott Johnston, and Larry Goldie
were joined by other locals Flash Clark, Midge Cross and Larry
Miller toured up the local landmark of Driveway Butte. |
| |
 |
| Driveway Butte is the formation that
separates Highway 20 and the Early Winter's drainage from
Lost River Road and the headwaters of the Methow River.
Starting at a modest height of only 2100', we climbed
over 3000' toward the top of the butte. Here Scott and
Midge climb up the open slopes. |
|
| |
 |
| The weather in the mountains was a bit
cloudy, though we were in the sun most of the day. |
|
| |
 |
| Topping out on the ridge, we enjoyed
great views and frosty trees. |
|
| |
 |
| Here Scott skins along the ridge with
Goat peak in the background. |
|
| |
 |
| The snow stayed incredibly good, even
on the low elevation South facing slopes! |
|
| |
 |
| Never one to shy away from a flat landing,
Flash airs it out on his tele gear. |
|
| |
 |
| We climbed back to the top and descended
the feature known as Doe canyon. The snow here was even
better. Here Katharine skis down. |
|
| |
 |
| Larry Miller whooping it up at the head
of Doe Canyon. Once again, we found great snow all the
way to the road and after skiing 5500' were back at the
cars by 1:30. |
